Dear Words Readers,
We hope this letter finds you in good health, and in a prosperous enough position to put wealth into the pockets of people like me, down on their luck– you see, that was my wife you decided to… Kidding! Ahem. Anyways.
Hello, wonderful readers! We’re so excited to welcome you back to another year of The Words. We’re your senior newsletter editors, Chloë Moore ’24 (she/they), and Zoe Scheuerman ’24 (she/her). Don’t worry, we’re not expecting you to be able to keep our names straight!
If you’ve only just signed up for our mailing list, congratulations! You have now joined a small (but prestigious, and also small) community of the Macalester English Department’s most dedicated denizens. The Words will be delivered with love to your inbox on the morning of the first Thursday of every month. If you can find us among the emails from companies you thought you’d unsubscribed from, Moodle reminders, and people begging you for help on homework, you’ll find little slices of joy within our (digital) pages.
The Words exists to keep you posted on the goings-on of our department, including information on and recaps of events, class and professor highlights, stories on the projects and publications of students, faculty, and alumni, and more! All of our stories are sourced, written, and edited by our student newsletter team: us (Chloë and Zoe), and our wonderful associate editors, Patrick Coy-Björk ’24 (he/they), and Anna Šverclová ’23 (they/them). While we are ~obviously~ in possession of bottomless ideas about what to write (heh), we also want your help! If you’re getting published, bringing in a guest speaker, attending or hosting a cool literary event, or just being awesome in general, let us know! In coordination with our department’s viral content creation team (by which we mean social media managers Charley and Birdie), we want to hype you up to our audiences and make sure you all get the spotlights you deserve.
With that said, our hope for this year is that The Words continues to be a way to build relationships between all parts of the English Department community: students, faculty, staff, alumni, and any random people who happen to be on this email list (heyyyy). We want to keep bringing you relevant, interesting, cheery, and community-oriented stories, and we hope that you enjoy reading them as much as we enjoy creating them (though hopefully you require less espresso). We’ve been through, and continue to go through, a lot of unpredictability and hardship over the last few years. While it’s not quite over yet, we hope that The Words can be a small bright spot for you, a little monthly reminder that you have like-minded folk out here who also love and care about words. We’ll see you in future issues!
With love,
Chloë and Zoe, Senior Newsletter Editors
