Upcoming Events in the English Department

The English department has exciting events planned throughout the month of September to ring in the start of the academic year! For your convenience, we’ve listed all the important events happening this month. We would love to see you there (and expresses our gratitude through free food)!


Monday, September 18 – Celebration for Professor Marlon James

Our next event of the year, the Celebration for Professor Marlon James, will be hosted from 4:45-6:15 PM on Monday, September 18th in Janet Wallace Commons. Come thank and celebrate Professor Marlon James for his 15 years as a professor in the English department as he moves to emeritus status. The event will have a brief program at 5:15 and fancy refreshments. Please RSVP at this link!

Wednesday, September 20 – Coffee House

Coffee House

If you enjoy our first Coffee House, be sure to attend our second Coffee House of the year on Wednesday, September 20th from 4:30-5:30 PM in the Old Main 4th Floor Lounge. We will be hosting a mini student org fair with some English-related student orgs (Chanter, MacSlams, etc.). Snacks are TBD (but will be great nonetheless).

Thursday, September 21 – English Fall Luncheon

English Fall Luncheon

The penultimate event of September is the English Fall Luncheon. Come indulge in phenomenal food on Thursday, September 21 from 11:30-1:00 PM at the Leonard Center Portico! Delicious Pho Sandwiches will be served fresh from Russel’s Traveling Kitchen Food Truck. Majors, minors, and faculty are all invited to attend and celebrate the start of the school year! Tickets to the food truck will be handed out in all English classes or you can pick one up in the English office.

Friday, September 22 – Amy Elkins’s Book Launch

For the last event of September, we will celebrate Professor Elkins’s book Crafting Feminism from Literary Modernism to the Multimedia Present on Friday, September 22nd from 5:00-6:00 PM in Smail Gallery (AKA Olin-Rice 206, on the 1st Floor of Olin-Rice). There will be light refreshments and books will be available for purchase! Masking is requested for this event. The English Department is excited for all these wonderful events and to see everyone old and new! If you happen to miss out on any of these events, stay tuned for the events that are coming up in October!
