Fall Dance Concert: Dreaming the World Forward

Guest choreographer Karla Grotting will be presenting a new work, Groove. Grotting is a founding member and a principal dancer of Flying Foot Forum. Her choreography blends the unique styles of tap, jazz, modern and percussive dance. She has toured nationally with JAZZDANCE by Danny Buraczeski, Keane Sense of Rhythm, and the MN Jazz Dance Company.
Faculty from the Macalester Theatre and Dance Department will also be presenting choreography, including Patricia Brown’s The Ancient Gathering Tree, set to music by Sowah Mensah. Jill Lile’s Suite G, is a classical ballet performed to music by Tchaikovsky. Krista Langberg’s Catriona Sophia Linnea 1996 – 2015, is a trio of solos exploring ideas of translation, working with impressions from Yvonne Rainer’s historic Trio A. Wynn Fricke presents The People’s Circus, a raucous dance about our high-speed culture, set to club music by DJ Frederico Scarva.
Student works include Shaylene McCue’s ’18 (Antioch, Ill.) Gatherings, performing the moment in time just before dark. Karin Davey’s ’18 (Lake Crystal, Minn.) Whispers on the Prairie, inspired by the feelings invoked by a morning on the prairie, is both gentle and slightly menacing. Kyoko Sakai’s ‘16 (Tokyo, Japan) How It Feels to Know You, ‘I felt alone until I met you,’ is inspired from Twinsters. Catriona Leckie’s ‘17 (Pelham, N.Y.) That which has been washed away, plays with the ways in which we react to and are influenced by others. Colleen Cilwick’s ‘17 (Ogden, Utah), Women’s work is about finding safety, healing, and solidarity through the actions of dance and labor.
