Venus in Fur

Venus in Fur

a play by David Ives
directed by Emily Nadel

September 8-9, 2017
Black Box Theatre

If there were no consequences, how would you act? In a culture increasingly determined to socialize women to take up less space, to control their tempers, to remain ‘poised’ under threat of discrimination or being labeled as ‘crazy’ or ‘hysterical’, Venus in Fur, by David Ives, offers a direct contradiction to this reality. This is a play that gives space for a woman to be angry, to blatantly call out the sexism she experiences, and to come out against the systems that demonize her. This process has given us the same opportunity; it is work that taps into the stories and anger that we are feeling, giving all of us the ability to depict and delve into more honest portrayals of complicated relationships.
