Sigma Tau Delta is a US-based, international honor society for English students. Membership with Macalester’s chapter of the honor society, Alpha Rho Theta, provides an English-y community on campus, excursions into the Twin Cities literary community, and access to Sigma Tau Delta’s opportunities such as newsletters, publishing chances, and conferences.

Reagan Kimzey ‘24 recently attended one such conference. Hear about the experience in her words below!

Reagan at the conference

I attended and presented at the Sigma Tau Delta Centennial Convention in St. Louis, MO on April 5! I presented a paper I wrote when I was abroad in Amsterdam on retroactivism and futurity and in HIV/AIDS films, comparing Rent (2005) and 120 BPM, a French film from 2017. I got some really good feedback from professors on my research and paper, as the theory is somewhat niche, and it was really cool to be encouraged to continue this research. My co-panelists’ presentations were fascinating, and I learned a lot from them. The convention itself was huge, with hundreds of people from across the US and even some international participants! I roomed with two other students and got to attend their presentations, as well as some panels that related to classes and subjects I am studying today. I am so grateful to the English department and the Critchett Fund for helping me attend this conference and learn more about my topic, as well as getting to meet so many cool and intelligent people!
